I’m researching my own artworks and am trying to figure what works and what hasn’t, is quite difficult actually, it seems like there are periods when specific themes are more popular than others. One of my series that sold out was the set I did for Gallery Nucleus, the very first time that I submitted to their annual Power In Numbers group exhibition. I called those “Travelers” they where compositions of woman traveling in a magical little piece of miniature land with all sort of objects and creatures, the image of the females were toned down unlike my usual, reason because I figure the audience of that gallery is more into the cute style art than the more racy.
I was right at that point I guess, but true to be told, I feel much more happy doing just a bit darker and a tiny bit racy artwork, I like to incorporate that Pin-up feel without actually been Pin-ups. But overall I liked this concept, the floating effect, the surreal feel and the funny-cute touch to it.
This year I want to revisit this compositions, kind of, but add my latest way of illustration to it, last year I focused quite a bit on portraits, and although they did well in 2022, 2023 proved to be not a great year for them.
Enter the ‘Pastry Society’, this year’s artwork tittle. So far I don’t have any event schedule, thus most of these are going to be for either submissions, open calls and personal sales. Please contact me through my website if interested in any of my pieces or for commissions. The following image is that of my very first piece of the year, actually the fourth one, but I will start counting along with the Chinese new year, but still the first for the mentioned series.
‘Pastry Society No. One’ aka Chocolate Croissant, is my feelings of uncertainty, a desire to keep moving forward amid the ‘grayness’ of the current times. My character CocoaButter a cute Witch of sorts, has a smirk, a glimpse of hope on her eyes, she is going strong and along she carries and guides this creature made of pastries and chocolate who has no idea on how to proceed, and whose uncertainty is making him melt in desperation, (alter ego).
I really had a great time doing this piece, I had in my mind for a few days before I even sketched, there were a couple of blocks, mainly deciding how to render the wall vs the main objects/characters, but once sorted in my head this went really smooth. Also there is, among the graffiti, images done by my wife and kids! Really hope you like it and if you have any comment or question about this piece or any other one, please let me know, either here, on Instagram or at Mastodon, I will be more than happy to answer
Also don’t forget to check out my store for stickers and limited edition shirt, also have some designs on Teepublic and soon on Redbubble, links below. Thank you for reading, till the next one!
