Summer finally hit Los Angeles, and that means is a hard time to draw, illustrate and paint, to me a least, I really dislike hot weather and air conditioning isn’t affordable, a fan will do as it has for last two decades but can’t be helped. On a better news I started to move with different “gears”, been studying and researching rendering techniques and figuring what kind of compositions I want to do without moving much from my style and characters. Starting new pieces with a completely different approach was a bit odd, but after a few layers of paint I started feeling them and finished a couple with lots of fun actually!
This piece is called “Memoria” is for a coming group show in September, I will post more info as we get close to the date. The Saturn Robot was one of my favorite toys, I remember been very young when I got it, early 80’s, and it was so mesmerizing to see its lights glow in the dark room, the sound of the motors is a unique unintended especial effect. the look itself is so odd, goof and retro that even at this days, I find those type of toy robots very amusing. If you have one of these in working conditions and would like to trade for one of my art pieces let me know! Any way, this is a ‘Memoria’ (memory) now, I don’t know what happened to my robot, probably given away to the village kids where my grandpas farm is. I left home in my late teens and never came back, so many things I used to have are no more. This painting represents me, which is something I don’t really like to do, but as a challenge it was a great exercise, here I painted myself as a little monkey playing and enjoying sweets snacks and thinking on women who also fascinated me even then, I got a precocious mind, what can I say :). Stay tuned for the show!
I made this painting at the beginning of last year, here I started to swap the ratios of painting and illustration, it is about half & half, but the goal is to eventually do about 75% painting and 25% illustration as I pursuing fine art. This is also one of my bigger pieces, since I’ve been doing mainly small artwork. This 20x20 inch piece is now on display for the first time at an exhibition in the ArtBar LA Gallery in Venice Ca. If you are in the area make sure to check it out along many other great pieces of art. Its called ‘Hansel’s Dream’ a name I’m giving to many of my pieces with the same topic, is pretty much a monkey (Hansel) who’s only goal is to chase the cutest witch that bakes handsomely, if that ain’t a dream then I don’t know what is. Notice that this still has my older design of my alter ego, Mad Monkey, who happens to be a possessed plush toy :).
I just made a new design for stickers! I’m going to have them at a booth at Thinkspace Gallery ‘Mini Artist Mart’ organized by fellow artist Goopmasta, where I’m having a huge big sale because times are hard, storage is short, and my birthday month is coming. If you are around the area come and say hi. Because of this I will not have anything on my web store for a week, after that make sure to check back my website and my previous blog entries for a discount coupon. will have some nice stuff back in the store.
As always thanks for reading. till next month.
