Regardless of the difficulties and slowness of this year, art wise, I’ve been doing quite a bit of artwork, probably the most I’ve done, specially on other surfaces than paper. There were many “first” for me, first time painting live for a charity auction, first time vending with a booth (although it started on last December actually), first time sending artwork for group exhibitions outside United States, to Canada and to New Zealand, and first solo exhibition. So I end up in red numbers but I did profit a lot in experience and in refining my art skills
One big change is that most of the artwork I did this year was on either wood panels or in canvas, this allowed me to introduce more color to it. I do enjoy black and white mostly artwork but I also like to mix the mediums.
One thing that I’ve notice is the perception of people towards artwork when is on paper vs when is on canvas/panels, I think paper isn’t perceived as much as an art piece by many, in other words paper gets often snob at, and although I don’t agree with this, reality is that I’m making art for people who would like to collect it, thus one of my reasons to move often to other surfaces. What do you think? Is it more “art” when in a canvas/panel than on paper? (excluding watercolor) Do you prefer either or? Let me know! I’m very curious on this topic’s feedback.
To me, both mediums offer advantages, on paper I can work very fast, I can get rid of the under sketch and graphite lines quite easy, but because I mostly use ink, any mistake is unfixable, I can work around it but usually takes a lot of thinking on how to “save” those mistakes. Also the best paper for ink isn’t great for acrylic or water color, and vise versa thus the artwork must remain mostly black and white, is not a big problem but some compositions work better with color.
The wood panels and canvases are great for painting and is easy to cover and fix mistakes, yet is difficult to ink on canvas and can ruin some type of pens. They definitely are more forgiving than paper, and the ones I like to use (with built in frame) don’t need outer framing, is much more convenient and practical to carry them around, ship them, etc.
Well I don’t have preference actually, just like when I do digital art, I like to change my approach and compositions depending on the medium.
I’m planning of ding much more art, paper, canvas and wood, doesn’t matter at the end, and this coming year I really want to fully get my self into the toy customization, painting on toys, art-toys or regular ones, that is also on my to do list. And hopefully I can manage to learn 3d on blender so I can produce my own toys too!
Stay tuned for coming artwork. I have stuff on my store too! Thank you so much for following my crafts, till the next article!
